New Iberia, Lousiana

Explorer Post E-580 was established in May of 1997. The Explorer post is chartered by the Boy Scouts of America Evangeline Area Council. This post is sponsored by the Iberia Parish Fire District Number 1, which consists of unincorporated areas of New Iberia, Jeanerette, Loreauville, and Delcambre. The Iberia Parish Fire District Number 1 protects over 30,000 residents over 300 square miles. The Iberia Parish Fire District Number 1 is also responsible for fire protection at the Port of Iberia and the Acadiana Regional Airport. The program currently contains 10 members from various departments in Iberia Parish. An Explorer is partnered with the nearest volunteer fire station to his or her home.

Age Requirements

Explorers of Iberia Parish range from between 14 to 18 years of age.

Training Requirements

Explorers are required to complete a 22 hour certification training period and a minimum of 36 hours of training per year. Explorers are allowed to participate in almost all types of training.

Time Periods for Response to Calls

Explorers may run calls between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM on school days. Explorers may respond at any time on weekends and holidays.

Cost

The cost for being an Explorer in Iberia Parish is only $8.00 per year. This fee is paid by the Iberia Parish Fire District.

Bunker gear, a pager, and a blue helmet distinguishing Explorers from firefighters are issued by the partnered station of the Explorer.

Incentive Pay

Explorers receive pay annually based on training hours put in by the individual Explorer. A volunteer for the Iberia Parish Fire District Number 1 makes about $2.00 per training hour and no more than $250.00 per year no matter how many training hours the member has completed.

Types of Calls Explorers May Run

When Explorers have completed the 22 hour certification training they are required to have a parental consent form signed with any restrictions a parent or guardian may want on their child. The Iberia Parish Fire District only restricts Explorers from responding to Hazardous Material calls. The types of calls run by Explorers are Fire, EMS (rarely), Search and Rescue, and Extrication. The training program for Explorers cover the following areas - Fire Suppression Skills, Emergency Medical Care, Specialized Rescue, Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting, and Fire Prevention.

Getting to Calls

Explorers have a choice of responding directly to the scene or responding to their partnered station. Explorers are allowed to ride the fire or rescue trucks with another firefighter to an emergency incident. Explorers who drive are not allowed to respond to any emergency incident using a siren or emergency lights of any kind. After completion of the 22 hour certification training period, Explorers are given a pollicies and procedures manual witch they are required to follow.
